The following description is quite imprecise: We took three glasses, filled them with an identical amount of water, and added sugar into two and yeast into two, so that we had one glass with sugar and water, one with yeast and water, and one with yeast, sugar, and water. We then mixed all three into plastic bottles and put balloons on top instead of lids. The purpose was to see which would release the most carbon dioxide. I theorized that the sugar, yeast, and water solution would win, as it has yeast, which produces Carbon Dioxide when it respires anaerobically, and sugar, which feeds the yeast. I was right. Suggested: Make 3 glasses, A, B, C. To glass A Add water and sugar To glass B Add water and yeast To glass C Add water, yeast and sugar Mix each glass well, then pour into its own plastic bottle - bottles A, B, C Over the top of each bottle place an uninflated balloon. The purpose was to see which emitted the most gas by looking at which balloon inflated most. I expected it to be glass C, because when the yeast eats the sugar it can create most CO2 by anaerobic respiration. Questions: Did the other balloons inflate at all? Why or why not?
